Fishing North Dakota Lakes and Rivers

By: Mike Singh

North Dakota Fishing. That's right, fishing in North Dakota is as good as it gets. Whether you are fishing on one of the many lakes in the state or maybe one of the fine river systems, there are many species of fish to go after, and it's all here for the taking.

The prime target of fisherman and ladies is the Walleye. Our waterways produce many Walleye for the taking. Devil's Lake, North Dakota is probably the premier walleye fishery in this country. Devil's Lake is the largest natural body of water in North Dakota. Fisherman come from all over the country to get a chance at catching one of these trophy walleye, here in the Devil's Lake area.

North Dakota is loaded with many, I do mean many smaller lakes that produce some great fishing. Many species of fish are to be had in these fine lakes including; perch, blue gill, crappie, small mouth bass, silver bass, northern pike, trout, and oh yes, we can't forget, the bullhead.

The Missouri River is a great place for the fisherman to try his luck. Lake Sakakawea is a reservoir on the Missouri River System, the largest man - made lake in the state. Rainbow and brown trout along with chinook salmon can be found here. Walleye, sauger, northern pike, and pan fish - crappie and perch, great fishing for everyone.

I do the majority of my fishing on the Sheyenne River near Valley City and Lisbon, North Dakota. Jigging below dams is one of my favorite ways to fish. There are several old dams on the Sheyenne River I frequently fish. Walleye is the primary fish I go after, but it is not uncommon the hook up with a big northern pike. What a rush it is to catch a 20 - 25 pound Carp!

There are several smaller lakes in SE. North Dakota that are populated with trout. I miss trout fishing being from Washington state and all. These lakes that have trout are also producing perch and crappie. Some nice small mouth bass make their homes in many lakes in North Dakota.

For a great experience in the great outdoors, pack up the family and head to a lake or river system and try your luck. Fishing is a very relaxing pass time and a great stress reliever. Just do it! Get out there and discover North Dakota and all it has to offer.
